Microneedling Aftercare: What to Do in the First 72 Hours
By Eternal Health & Wellness Acupuncture Center | August 17, 2026
West San Jose, Saratoga Avenue corridor near the Saratoga and Campbell border
One thing I hear a lot from people who come to Eternal Health & Wellness Acupuncture Center is how quickly their skin can look brighter and “so much better” after a facial style service. Microneedling can do that too, but your first 72 hours matter more than the session itself. The most important rule is simple: keep your skin clean, cool, and protected. That means no sun, no sweating, no pools, no makeup, and no active ingredients like retinol, exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs), or vitamin C while your skin is sealing those micro-channels.
0–24 hours after microneedling: calm skin first, then gently cleanse
Right after a micro needle treatment, it’s normal for your face to look pink to red and feel warm, kind of like a sunburn. I want you thinking “cool and clean, ” not “scrub and fix.”
Do this today: wash your hands before touching your face, use only a gentle cleanser when I tell you it’s okay to cleanse, and stick to hydration-focused layers like hyaluronic acid and a simple moisturizer as directed.
- Skip makeup for the first 24 hours. Your pores and micro-channels need time to close.
- Avoid workouts, hot yoga, saunas, and anything that makes you sweat heavily. Heat and sweat can sting and increase irritation.
- No swimming pools, hot tubs, or open water. Chlorine and bacteria are not your friends right now.
- Don’t use retinol, AHAs/BHAs, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, or physical scrubs.
If you’re driving home through San Jose traffic after an appointment, a clean, cool compress can feel great. Keep it gentle, keep it clean, and don’t press hard.
24–72 hours: this is where glow happens (if you avoid sweat and sun)
Days two and three are when people get tempted to “go back to normal.” In West San Jose, the Saratoga Avenue corridor is sunny more often than you think, and our Mediterranean climate can sneak up on you. Sun exposure plus freshly treated skin is the fastest way to end up blotchy and irritated.
I generally recommend you keep workouts, heavy sweating, and heat exposure off the calendar for at least 48 to 72 hours. That includes long outdoor walks in warm weather. If you’re a busy tech professional or a parent trying to squeeze this in on a weekend, plan low-key days. It protects your result.
Real-life timing tip: Late-afternoon or weekend appointments work well if you live near the Saratoga/Campbell border, especially when you can head straight home and skip sun and errands. We’re also easy to get to from I-280 and CA-85, so you’re not adding extra stress to your day.
Hydration is still the priority. Keep your routine short. Cleanse gently, moisturize, and let your skin do the repair work it came here to do.
Days 3–7: easing back into skincare without ruining your microneedling results
By day three, many people notice that “refreshed and bright” look starting to show up more clearly. I also see a common pattern in my skincare clients here in San Jose: the people who don’t rush actives tend to see a smoother finish and more even tone.
- Don’t pick or scrub. If you get light flaking or tiny dry patches, leave them alone and moisturize.
- Hold off on facial add-ons. No peels, no dermaplaning, no exfoliating facials for at least a week unless I specifically clear it.
- Keep heat low. Even if you feel fine, intense workouts and saunas can still trigger extra redness in this window.
If you booked microneedling for scars, especially acne scarring, the “slow and steady” approach matters. Collagen remodeling takes time. If you want a deeper explanation of how microneedling for scars works, I wrote it out in microneedling for acne scars.
The simple product plan: hyaluronic acid, barrier cream, mineral SPF
I keep aftercare product advice very basic on purpose. Your skin is in repair mode. Too many “helpful” products can backfire.
What I want in your routine
- Gentle cleanser with no exfoliating acids or scrubbing beads.
- Hydration-focused serum (hyaluronic acid is a great option) used exactly as directed.
- Barrier-support moisturizer (ceramides and peptides are usually well tolerated).
- Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) once I’ve cleared you to start SPF.
If you’re commuting between Saratoga, Campbell, Cupertino, Santa Clara, or Los Gatos, keep SPF in your bag once you’re cleared for it. Short sun bursts add up fast around here.
What’s normal, what’s not, and when I want to hear from you
A little redness, mild swelling, tightness, and light flaking can be normal after microneedling. What I don’t want you doing is guessing when something feels off. People come to me because they feel listened to and well cared for, and that doesn’t stop when you walk out the door.
Reach out right away if you notice: severe pain, pus or oozing, fever, or swelling that keeps increasing past 72 hours.
If you’re stacking goals, skin plus stress management near me, or you’re also searching Acupuncture near me or Pain Management near me, I can talk with you about spacing appointments so your schedule stays realistic. Many of my long-time patients also do Acupuncture, Cupping, and stress management alongside skincare for overall wellbeing.

Microneedling aftercare FAQs I get every week
How long before I can wear makeup after microneedling?
I generally want you to wait at least 24 hours. If you’re still very red or sensitive at that point, give it more time. Makeup sits in pores and can irritate freshly treated skin.
Can I exercise or go to a hot yoga class after microneedling?
Plan on skipping intense exercise, hot yoga, and saunas for 48 to 72 hours. Sweat, heat, and friction can ramp up irritation and slow your recovery.
When should I start using sunscreen after microneedling?
Start mineral SPF (zinc or titanium) once I’ve cleared you to do so, often after the first day when the skin has calmed down. Sun protection is non-negotiable in San Jose, especially in warmer months.
How long until I can restart retinol or vitamin C?
I generally recommend holding retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids for at least 72 hours. If your treatment was more aggressive or you’re still irritated, I’ll have you wait longer.
Is peeling, redness, or small scabs normal after microneedling?
Mild redness, light flaking, and tiny dry patches can be normal as your skin renews. Don’t pick. If you see pus, worsening swelling past 72 hours, severe pain, or you feel sick or feverish, reach out right away.
How much is a microneedling facial cost?
Microneedling facial cost depends on the plan we’re building, how many sessions you need, and what we’re targeting (texture, fine lines, scars). If you tell me your main goal and your timeline, I’ll walk you through the cost for microneedling in a clear, no-pressure way.
What affects the cost for microneedling?
The biggest factors are how many sessions we plan, how reactive your skin is, and if you’re focusing on microneedling for scars versus a general brightening and smoothing plan. I also factor in downtime, since most people want results without disrupting work or family plans.
Is microneedling for scars worth it?
Microneedling for scars is often a good choice for acne scarring because it supports collagen remodeling over time. Most people need a series, and aftercare matters a lot so the skin heals cleanly between sessions.
Is a micro needle treatment a lot of downtime?
Downtime is usually short, but it’s not zero. Expect redness the first day, then a few days of sensitivity and possible light flaking. If you follow the first-72-hours rules, most people feel comfortable being back out in the world quickly.
